2002 Honda CRV EVAP Woes

14S9A0_B04.gifI drove through a creek in my CRV and knocked something off the bottom of my car. Now I can't pass an emissions test, my registration is expired, and I can't renew it. The part I'm missing is either #8 ($45) or #11 ($70)--it's hard to tell from this diagram. But what really sucks is that the part got knocked off with the electrical connector still plugged in. No one sells just the connector without the rest of the harness and the harness is $400+. Now I'm scouring junkyards and ebay, and debating whether to experiment with soldering the wire ends directly to the new component.

count this as one vote for soldering! i just discovered soldering (both stereo wires and garage door opener) and it was a lot of fun. good luck finding the part you need.

also, kudos to you for taking the CRV through a creek. dare i ask why you undertook such a maneuver?

I was exploring real estate in the mountains and we were on a "path" through the woods that crossed the creek. It did not look very deep, but the rest is history.

Brooklynne and I have had an ongoing debate about the CRV. It is 4-wheel-drive, but is it an off-road vehicle? I've been a proponent of pushing its limits; Brooklynne says it isn't designed for rough going. I told her all it needs is a lift kit. She says I'm welcome to put a lift kit on my civic.

Kim and I had a similar debate--she had a Wrangler and I had a VW. Luckily, she let me put a 2.5" lift on the Jeep a couple years ago, and then last week, as a reward for living car-free in LA for a year, she gave me the Jeep when we bought a used Focus.

I did a basic Google search, and it looks like you're right on the CRV thing; check out the pictures here: http://tinyurl.com/2wpzwde

A lift can make a huge difference in how these things look, but I wonder how much difference it makes in fuel efficiency. Have you noticed a difference in the jeep?

When Brooklynne finally talks me into a mini-van, I would probably just sell the CRV and get a 1970s-era landcruiser, except I can't afford the gas.

i haven't taken the time to do a real measurement, but i can vouch that there was no appreciable loss in mpg.

i have always wondered about the physics of mpg's--if you don't regear and you don't change tire size, how would a lift affect fuel efficiency?
