Election Recap
Five thoughts from election night:
- McCain' concession speech was one of the best things I've heard coming out of that man's mouth since his convention bump dissolved and he decided to go negative. The guy is an upright citizen who lost his way for a bit, but I believe he will truely put this election behind him and work constructively with Obama in the future.
- Elizabeth Doles' concession speech, on the other hand, was nasty and uncalled for. (Kay Hagan got in some digs too, though, characterizing the tone of the entire campaign.)
- I was hoping to stay up until NC was called, but I ran out of gas at about 1am. When I got up and the state was still too close to call, I was glad I gave up when I did.
- I hope Obama gets his daughters an airedale.
- One man does not a nation make. I think Obama knows this, but I'll be interested to see whether Obama can (or even tries) to turn his overwhelming ground game into sustained grassroots community action. That's the only way real change will happen.
I'm also curious to read Voices without Votes to see how the world is reacting.

I agree w/ you on McCain's speech. I also agree w/ you on Liddy Dole's speech. It was really full of nonsense. I watched it in its entirety and she basically said...nothing. At least Pat McCrory had the good sense to hush after about 5 minutes.
Me personally, I hope Malia and Sasha get a Lab. I love Labs, but know you guys are understandably partial to Airedales. :)
People in Norway have been following the election with an enorous interest this year. The US election has been one of the most discussed topics in the news for several months. Some people stay up all night to get the results - there's been quite a few sleepy heads in the department today, especially among Americanists, but also others. Some of my Americanist colleagues haven't slept for a couple of days - being bombarded by requests to answer questions about the election.
One poll shows that almost 80% of Norwegians prefer Obama, even core conservatives. So, people here are pleased with the results! But, on another note, the Norwegian media has not been balanced in their portrayals of McCain and Palin...
