A surreal experience.
Tonight before the program, we were about to pray and we were all introducing each other--I just said my name was Miles Travis--and then we prayed. After the prayer, one of the girls asked, "That's funny--have you ever heard of the Miles Travis Suite?" There was an awkward moment before I said, "I'm that Miles Travis." She looked confused, then surprised, and finally excited. "My brother lived there! Did you know him?" I did not. But apparently people don't associate the suite with an actual person any more. Maybe she thought it was named after an old rich guy?

That's hysterical. :) You should get some sort of dues from all residents, past and future.
Wow. Davie, McCorkle, Miles Travis. Who knew? That's an awesome and funny story.
Do you remember who it was? It's very possible that there are people who are familiar with the MTS now who I don't even now. The last person I knew who was there was a couple of years after I graduated. I wasn't aware it had endured.
Wow. Did she say whether or not they still do MoW? Yer quite the legend, friend.
Meaning to toot my own horn, I was once MoW. I also once met an Inuit while in Canada who had heard of the MTS ... Okay, so maybe not - but I was MoW.
i'm slightly confused, weren't you there to talk about the MTS? which made her comment only more awkward/funny? either way, awesome that you're famous. :)
Ok, so now that I've thought about it, I bet I know who it was.
Hahaha, so seriously bro, what did you talk about, other than Piratey things, random odors, annual t-shirt fundraisers, and endless hours of planning / executing prank wars (my 2 personal favs: "cupping" the suite hallway, and "flour"ing your friends). By the way, I am still sporting my MTS shirt, and it has now been introduced to 3 continents. :-)
Brad, I'm glad you asked that because I would hate it if the MTS was just a place to goof off all the time. Honestly, I had very little to do with most of the really fun things that went on in the MTS, so you can thank Will, Brian, Greg, Brad, and Ray for that. And there were other suites of guys that were doing the same things (suite cool comes to mind).
But what I talked about was that as a junior, I was on IV Exec as community coordinator, but I was living off campus. Our focus scripture for that year was 1 Thess. 2:8, and I realized that I was not sharing my life with the people I was trying to serve and love. So I did not reapply for Exec that year, but chose instead to be a small group leader and moved back onto south campus. I actually went potluck in my senior-year housing request and expected to get placed with a freshman. But I think God responded to my effort to be intentional, and gave me 5 great guys in the suite instead of one guy in the room. He also blessed me with a perfect small group co-leader who complimented my strengths and weaknesses, and gave our efforts at community unpresidented success. I hope that all the fun we had in some way pointed toward Christ and that the guys in the suite and the rest of the dorm grew in maturity and faith as well. I hope that doesn't get lost in all the other, more crazy stories.
Miles, thanks for the scoop on what you shared about. And I hope you don't think all I associate with the MTS is pranks and laughing... bro, you are an inspiration to us all: live intentionally and seek out community!
Because of your example, and the advice of people like Brandon Davis & Mike Prassee (btw, anyone have any ideas what those 2 guys are up to? Married? Kids? Charlotte? Elsewhere?) I stayed in HJ all 4 yrs, too, and had some pretty awesome community with freshmen there during my sr. yr. From what I remember, Jason is the worship leader at a church in Durham, Jess & Ryan are married and she is on IV staff with Meridith, Rob is also on IV staff somewhere, Kathryn roomed with Jen Hagin for 2 yrs while Jen was on IV staff, Mike K. is on IV staff in GA, Mike J is a youth pastor in Seattle, & Mel has begun exploring short-term missions. I dont know what Craig is up to, King's working in Raleigh, and Andrew finished law school and is living in SC. I'm so glad I had the chance to share life with these 10 people, all of whom I met during their fr./my sr. years in Hinton James. :) As I know you know, it's so cool to hear about (& be blessed by) their ministries, even yrs later! God does some pretty sweet things with intentional community, doesn't he?!
to answer the question I posed about Mike Prasse (and to reveal my stalkerish skills using Google and keywords: Mike Prasse Charlotte), I think he and Leah are leading a bible study group with Charlotte South Fellowship on Thursday nights for 20s-30s, focusing particularly on marriage issues and communication. :) Any thoughts if this is the same couple who befriended me my freshman year (and Mike once asked me to smile more after he bumped into me by the Alumni Center one blustery October day in 1997....)
Ahhhh. Someone mentioned Suite Cool. Memories....
If we watched Beavis & Butthead/Austin Powers/The Wedding Singer/Platoon/Forrest Gump in Hoss & Marc's room once, we watched them a thousand times.
Seriously, I look back on those times in Suite Cool and the MTS and think that community really doesn't get much better than that.
