What a shot - amazing. I didn't get to see the game so I YouTubed Tyler's dunk on him, hoping to get pumped up. But instead I felt very sad - if you watch the video, look at George after the dunk. He just hangs his head, looking defeated, almost like he felt like a failure. I dunno, maybe I read too much. But I can only imagine how his life has been difficult being that size, and while he most certainly will AT LEAST ride the pine for a few years in the NBA and make millions in the process, does he know that he is OK just as he is?
Marshall, I love your big heart. But I wouldn't be too worried about Kenny George. I watched the game and I think there were many times when he had that head-down look that could be mistaken for dejection, but honestly, I think it had more to do with the effort of having to run down to the other end of the court, than with bad self esteem. And of course, you can't tell expressions from online articles, but what I read in the interviews after the game led me to the feeling that he was comfortable talking about the dunk with reporters.
He also made Sportcenter, Around the Horn, and PTI yesterday, thanks to the national exposure of playing the Heels, and everyone had positive things to say about him, even if he got posterized on one play.
This is turning into a book, but I have to share another Kenny George story. Last year, Brooklynne and I had tickets to the UNCA game just before Christmas, and we took Halleigh. At halftime, Santa Claus was out on the court taking pictures with kids, so we took Halleigh down onto the court, and we were standing on the floor, right beside the tunnel when George came back out. It is even more incredible than any photo just to stand beside the guy in person. Simply amazing.
