Marshall Benbow is the InterVarsity Area Director for the Western NC region. He lives in Greensboro with his wife Dianne, two girls Eliza and Psalter, and they are expecting a new baby boy, Jaccob, any day now. Marshall mentored Miles during his senior year at UNC (Miles's freshman year). Besides work and family, Marshall invests in his urban ministries to the Glenwood neighborhood, and in his overhand drive on the disc golf course.

Miles and Marshall discussed his small group and job, his family, disc golf, and the Tarheels. Click continue reading for the conversation.

kilotravis (9:46:55 PM): whats up

kilotravis (9:48:30 PM): alright, what's happening?

kilotravis (9:49:33 PM): Did you have a meeting tonight?

airbenbow (9:49:47 PM): had SG tonight

kilotravis (9:49:59 PM): Oh yeah, how did that go?

airbenbow (9:50:59 PM): it was good - the people in it are all people who live in Glenwood (except one), and that is our common ground, but there are married and single, people with kids and those without, college students and a woman who is in her late 30's. We all read the same Bible passages throughout the week, and then we share what stood out to us.

airbenbow (9:51:41 PM): We need the "I talk, it types" software!

kilotravis (9:51:58 PM): So do you have a certain sectin you're working through, or does someone just pick passages. yeah really

airbenbow (9:52:36 PM): We have a "read through the Bibe in two-years" plan that we follow; it is a course called The Pleasure of My Father's Fellowship, which was developed by a guy in Greensboro.

airbenbow (9:53:00 PM): The goal is to read passages and look for the one key verse that stood out to you that day and then meditate on it and apply it.

kilotravis (9:53:25 PM): So where are you now? And can you share your verse?

kilotravis (9:53:42 PM): remember this is going on my blog!!

airbenbow (9:53:57 PM): Oh yeah, better not share any "bad verses"

airbenbow (9:55:17 PM): The ones that stuck out to me the most were Psalm 18:19, which says He brought me into a spacious place, he rescued me because he delighter in me. I am fixing to blog about this soon, so I won't use all my material here, but short answer is the concept that GOd delights in me is one that is very foreign to my concept of Him on a daily basis. Also, the idea of "living spaciously" has captured me

airbenbow (9:56:15 PM): The other thing that caught me was how in Psalms 8 and 9 they reference the power of God's name, and in Acts, the church focuses a lot on the Name of Jesus and are persecuted for speaking in His name. For us/me, the Name of Jesus is more like a period at the end of my prayer. There is more power in that name than I realize, and I want to learn more about that.

airbenbow (9:57:00 PM): It's cool taking broad looks at Scripture and finding connections between books and passages. One of my mentors who studied the Psalms with me taught me to look at Scripture that way sometimes, more macro than micro.

kilotravis (9:57:18 PM): You are the only person I know that seems to ALWAYS read Psalms. I'm glad you can connect it to Acts fr us NT only types

airbenbow (9:57:45 PM): Yeah, the psalms are like an old friend to me. But really, I was reading them this time because they were in our scheduled reading

airbenbow (9:57:58 PM): Eugen Peterson loves the Psalms, therefore I love the Psalms

airbenbow (9:58:06 PM): Can you edit my typos?

kilotravis (9:58:20 PM): that wouldn't be authentic

kilotravis (9:58:30 PM): I don't know peterson

airbenbow (9:58:34 PM): Word

kilotravis (9:59:26 PM): I'm actually trying to find time to read the Bible that Jesus read because I want to connect more with the Old Testament

airbenbow (9:59:47 PM): Eugene Peterson? Man, you need to get to know him. He has had a profound impact on me. Right now I am reading a book by him called "Eat This Book" about studying Scripture, and it is powerful. He is so deep that I can read one line and have plenty to think about. Like today I read, "We are not the central character in our life story." That can give you something to chew on for a while.

airbenbow (10:00:02 PM): Who wrote that book?

kilotravis (10:00:39 PM): P. Yancy

airbenbow (10:00:47 PM): Thought that was who it was

airbenbow (10:01:06 PM): He has some crazy hair

airbenbow (10:01:11 PM): Like a big afro

kilotravis (10:01:35 PM): Really? thats crazy. So how's the Area Director thing

airbenbow (10:02:37 PM): Well, the AD thing is good. I am learning about being a supervisor, not just a spiritual director, which is the part of the job that I love (spiritual director). Supervising means you have to fill out reports, check financial statements, make tough calls with your staff.

airbenbow (10:02:55 PM): I enjoy it a lot, and am getting better at it, but the learning curve is steeper than I expected it to be

kilotravis (10:03:17 PM): Do you miss being more directly involved with the students?

airbenbow (10:04:43 PM): Sort of. I do have some student involvement through tutoring, and when I go to visit my staff on campus, I meet with their students. Also, with GUPY, I have a concentrated time with students that is almost more overall than I would have as as staff. But sometiems I miss the day to day student appointments, yes. That would be what I miss about campus staff work. At big events (URbana, Rockbridge), I almost feel like I know MORE students, since i have conncetions on so many campuses now.

airbenbow (10:05:13 PM): Man, I wish I could type better. What is a conncetion anyway?

airbenbow (10:05:30 PM): Maybe Wikkipedia has an article on it

kilotravis (10:06:00 PM): How has being an InterVarsity AD shown you that you are not the central character in your own life story?

kilotravis (10:06:17 PM): Ha! see how I can throw them back at you!

airbenbow (10:06:22 PM): Dang, that is a tough one, Have you been hanging out with Jane Pauley?

kilotravis (10:06:32 PM): ???

airbenbow (10:06:49 PM): She is a reporter who does specials for ABC

kilotravis (10:07:08 PM): You can see how plugged in I am.

kilotravis (10:07:29 PM): I'm too busy "learning" to watch the news

airbenbow (10:08:21 PM): I think that one way is how my struggles and gift mix have affected and helped my staff. One staff in particualr has struggled to believe and know that she is loved by God regardless of her performance and success, and my growth in grace has been a blessing to her. Well, I certainly didn't plan that; it was God's orchestration. I have not thought about that one much, though.

airbenbow (10:09:04 PM): If I pass out mid-convo, it's because my wife (my PREGNANT wife) has been spraying chairs with Scotchguard.

kilotravis (10:09:43 PM): How's Diane doing? she sounded good on the phone earlier

airbenbow (10:10:19 PM): She is fine. She says that sometime when she stands up she feels like Jacob is going to fall out, but she is a trooper. If he has not come by Sat, we have an induction scheduled

kilotravis (10:10:44 PM): Wow. That can be an ordeal.

airbenbow (10:11:22 PM): Yeah, but that way her mom c ould be here for his birth - she has been in africa for the other two, and she works, so having him on a weekend would be good

kilotravis (10:11:35 PM): What do Eliza and Psalter think about this? do they know they have a little brother on the way?

airbenbow (10:12:15 PM): They are excited, in as much as they can understand what is about to happen. They know Jacob is in there, and they kiss Diane's tummy and say, "Hey baby brother; hey baby Jacob."

airbenbow (10:12:48 PM): We tell them stories about Grumpy Squirrel, and the stories pretty much mirror their life, and last night Grumpy's mom had a baby boy.

airbenbow (10:13:17 PM): We also sing them Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children, and Tar Heel Born as part of the nightly routine.

kilotravis (10:13:29 PM): That's so much fun. Which one inspired "Grumpy?"

airbenbow (10:13:44 PM): Eliza

airbenbow (10:14:11 PM): He's really never Grumpy anymore in the stories - it was just the initial storyline

kilotravis (10:14:22 PM): We've been taking Halleigh to the basketball games this year

airbenbow (10:14:27 PM): Wait until you can do that with Halleigh

airbenbow (10:14:33 PM): Yeah, how did you get tickets? SUcker!

airbenbow (10:15:05 PM): Anytime Brooklynne feels unable to go, you know I will be sitting by the phone.

kilotravis (10:15:11 PM): We got Brian to buy season tickest and then we slipt them between my parents ad siblings

airbenbow (10:15:54 PM): Brian?

kilotravis (10:16:27 PM): Possum? Brian Sellers. We only have one pair left, and if anthing happens on March 4th we'll keep you in mind.

airbenbow (10:16:42 PM): Oh yeah. Good ol' Possum (who I don't really know)

airbenbow (10:16:51 PM): .. that well

kilotravis (10:17:47 PM): He is actually supposed to hearany day now about a really sweet job managing a box office at a theater in CA.

kilotravis (10:18:01 PM): I wish you guys had been able to hang out more

kilotravis (10:19:24 PM): Ok... new question. What are three things you wish you had more time for.

airbenbow (10:19:48 PM): 1) Disc golf

airbenbow (10:19:53 PM): 2) Dates with Diane

airbenbow (10:20:04 PM): 3) Watching movies (rentals)

airbenbow (10:20:39 PM): What about you?

kilotravis (10:21:03 PM): And if you had one day to kill around town, how would you spend it? I'll think about my answer while you type.

kilotravis (10:22:07 PM): 1) read non-school stuff

kilotravis (10:22:24 PM): 2) real golf

kilotravis (10:22:39 PM): 3) build my sailboat

airbenbow (10:23:42 PM): I would first go to Lake Brandy and walk in the woods for an hour or two, just be by myself. Then I would probably go to REI and/or Great Outdoor Provision Company and look at their really cool, really expensive stuff. I'd grab lunch at Moes or Chick Fil A (hopefully with a friend), and then I would go and play dics golf, two rounds (hopefully with a friend, but I am OK playing by myself, too). Then maybe take my laptop downtown to The Green Bean coffee shop and fart around on the internet.

kilotravis (10:24:35 PM): I'm going to be fined by the FCC if I put that kind of language on my blog

kilotravis (10:24:44 PM): but that sounds pretty good

airbenbow (10:25:30 PM): f**rt

airbenbow (10:25:36 PM): f*rt

airbenbow (10:25:40 PM): that better?

kilotravis (10:25:54 PM): We're planning to build a disc golf course at the cabin this summer

kilotravis (10:26:05 PM): We're debating designs

airbenbow (10:26:47 PM): Bulding the course before the cabin? Is the cabin built?

kilotravis (10:27:37 PM): No, I just mean at the site. Dad wants to bury stakes in the ground and then build detachable baskets so we don't have to leave them out

airbenbow (10:27:37 PM): PS Lake Brandy is actually Lake Brandt - Greensborians would wonder where Lake Brandy was

kilotravis (10:27:53 PM): I was wondering myself

airbenbow (10:27:56 PM): That is a good idea (about the baskets)

airbenbow (10:28:30 PM): You could also buy portable ones that fold up and just set them out each time

airbenbow (10:28:41 PM): A new course every time you play!

kilotravis (10:28:51 PM): The main point of contention is whether we really need baskets or if we can just make signs windy gap style

airbenbow (10:28:55 PM): Of course, then you couldn't break and set records

kilotravis (10:29:02 PM): aren't those expensive?

kilotravis (10:29:22 PM): There's also the old standby of using the trees

airbenbow (10:29:40 PM): You don't NEED baskets, but I kind of feelt that once you go to baskets, you never go back. THe portable ones are $100. But you could have a course that uses baskets for multiple holes from different tees

airbenbow (10:30:07 PM): Yeah, that's how we did it at UNC with aerobee golf - did we still play that when you got there? It was a south chapter tradition

kilotravis (10:31:23 PM): No, but I played the "crusade" course many many times. what I really want to do is build one real golf green in the center of the property and then build 18 tees in a circle around it

airbenbow (10:31:51 PM): That's a good idea - a lot of walking, but fun.

airbenbow (10:32:00 PM): Par 2

kilotravis (10:32:21 PM): what ever happened to UNCG's bid to buy Glenwood?

airbenbow (10:33:25 PM): Well, it wasn't nec. their bid, but I am not sure. I think that change is coming, but not as rapid as that random lady predicted. I am not sure what her deal was. Maybe she wanted to buy my house. I dunno. But there is a move to improve the Lee ST corridor that runs along Glenwood, which will attract development and really change our neighborhood.

kilotravis (10:34:25 PM): Is there a way for the change to be good for the neighborhood, or is it really just a bleak prospect?

airbenbow (10:35:12 PM): Well, it depends on what you mean by good. It will be good for home owners, because we will make a lot of $. It will be not as good for the poor because rent will go up and they will have to move or their homes that they are renting will be sold from under them.

airbenbow (10:35:49 PM): Note: I did not buy here to make $, but I know that will happen when we sell. I did not know that was a possibility 5 years ago

kilotravis (10:36:45 PM): How big is "Glenwood?" is it just a couple of blocks or does it encompass a larger area?

airbenbow (10:38:24 PM): No, it is pretty large. It basically is a rectangle - Freeman Mill Road to Florida St (about 3/4 of a mile), Florida St to Coliseum Blvd (about 1-2 miles), Coliseum to Lee (About one mile) and then Lee back to Freeman Mill (1-2 miles). I think that there are like 800 houses or so (?)

airbenbow (10:38:50 PM): It really varies block to block what and who you find here.

kilotravis (10:39:19 PM): How is tutoring going? do you have enough volunteers?

airbenbow (10:39:31 PM): We don;'t have enough volunteers, but....

airbenbow (10:40:48 PM): And this is another upcoming blog post, so I will not say too much, but we have a plan that will get us to a place of excellence by the end of the this semester, and next year we will be an effective, powerful force in the lives of these kids. God is raising a up a team of people with gifts in many areas and just fitting us together into an awesome unit. I am very excited. But for now we are treading water and hoping for more helpers

airbenbow (10:41:25 PM): we need like 20 more people on each day to be one on one with each kid, and we have a waiting list of kids who want to come.

kilotravis (10:43:08 PM): That's awesome. Things have always worked out for you guys in since you moved to Glenwood and I know success is not always a true yardstick, but you have to see how God is working all around that place

airbenbow (10:43:54 PM): Well, it is actually very hard to see sometimes, because I have such high hopes. But God blesses me with people who help me have perspective, and I can see him working, which is awesome. I am excited to see what He is doing.

kilotravis (10:44:01 PM): Ok, as much as I enjoy this, it's time to wrap it up.

kilotravis (10:44:14 PM): no one will read this much anyway!

airbenbow (10:44:20 PM): Man, who is going to read all this? Real quick - can we talk about this HEels?

kilotravis (10:44:46 PM): yes. if you mean the basketball team.

airbenbow (10:44:59 PM): I really like this team, but that kind of scare me and make me fear a second-round flame out in the NCAA's

airbenbow (10:45:11 PM): they kind of scare me, I meant

kilotravis (10:45:50 PM): I'm not sure I'm so scared of a second round flame out. I'm more worried about another heartbreaking loss in the final four

airbenbow (10:46:21 PM): I am looking for our leader - Reyshawn could be that. If a Lynch or a Noel emerges, we will be tough, tough, tough

kilotravis (10:47:41 PM): We've got what it takes. the only two games we lost were both nights that were incredibly abnormal

kilotravis (10:48:04 PM): When does Brandon Wright go 1-8

airbenbow (10:48:30 PM): Yeah, that's Wright (pun)

airbenbow (10:48:50 PM): OK, thanks for the chat. I hope that everyone reads this and is changed forever.

kilotravis (10:49:11 PM): Hey do you have a current picture you can email me before you go?

airbenbow (10:49:33 PM): Ummm, yeah, I can find one. Can I put it on this?

kilotravis (10:50:21 PM): maybe. I dunno. Also, when I was looking for pictures earlier, I googled your name and found links to your IV articles. Can I include them?

airbenbow (10:50:27 PM): I am sending it in just a sec

airbenbow (10:50:47 PM): what address do I use?

kilotravis (10:50:56 PM): mtravis2@gmu.edu

airbenbow (10:51:19 PM): OK, sent it

kilotravis (10:51:24 PM): Did you see that Jeff Saturday scored in the AFC championship game on saturday?

kilotravis (10:51:31 PM): sunday

airbenbow (10:51:36 PM): I thought of you and Cory when he did!

airbenbow (10:51:59 PM): You guys are famous

kilotravis (10:52:07 PM): I might wait for the season to be over for a while and then try to get him to do this with me.

airbenbow (10:52:25 PM): THAT would be cool

airbenbow (10:52:41 PM): See if he wants another ministry person to support with his Super Bowl bonue

airbenbow (10:52:43 PM): bonus

kilotravis (10:53:00 PM): alright. bed time. Peace bro

airbenbow (10:53:21 PM): bye

I read this whole thing and am changed and smarter for it. Man, I am incredibly white in that video. And Marsh you can still rap ("still" being back in 2001 when this was shot).

Wow, what depth, what intrigue, what suspense, and what insight! I agree with Cory: your readers are forever changed.

p.s.- Congrats to the men Heels on their victory over Duke in bball. Whoop!

p.s.s.- Miles, are you going to start watching Carolina football again? Didn't you give it up in protest earlier in the year?

miles said:

No, I'm not watching UNC football now (with the important exception that I will not turn down free tickets). I made a promise to never follow UNC football again until they got a quality win and the wins over Dook and State last year don't qualify. The schedule of quality opponents is hard to say until the new season arrives and we see the level of our competion, but I'm going to define "quality win" as a win over a Division I school that should have a winning season while playing in a major conference. Judging by last year's results, the next chance for UNC to get a win that would qualify under this requirement is Sept. 22 at South Florida, although the earlier home Virginia game could qualify if UVA improves over last season.
