2006-2007 Tar Heels

Tyler HansbroughIt looks like we might be able to get basketball season tickets this year thanks to Brian Sellers. I'm pretty excited about this, since the previous years my family got season tickets sadly corresponded with the years I was living in Montana. During that time I got to see exactly two games versus App. State and Coastal Carolina--not what I would call intense matchups. This year's events should be much more fun.

However, the purchase of basketball tickets leads me to reflect on the lack of football games I've gone to this season (0). This may seem strange to some folks who know me well, and have heard me say that I would gladly trade 3 future basketball championships for 1 football championship, hands down, no hesitations. But you have to realize that I'm willing to trade good basketball for good football, and I'm declaring today that I will not watch or follow UNC football again--EVER AGAIN--until they get at least one quality win. Comments?

I am with you on that one. Even though the ACC is not known for its great football rivalries, I have still been sorely disappointed with the football teams UNC has fielded. This is coming from a Cubs fan, so I know about losing teams.

Yes. UNC football has been so sad these past years. Guess the only recent high point was Barth's last-second field goal against Miami. But that was what, 2004? Two years ago. Man. Sad.

(However, *three* basketball championships? Wow that's dedication. Can't we have both? A-la Michigan, Maryland, Florida, etc? Btw, that was a recent conversation I had with some meteorology friends -- which universities have won both div. 1 basketball & football titles. We could only come up with the three I listed above. Does anyone know of any we missed?)

Brad,
I thought your question was very interesting. I looked up the national football and basketball champions. (Of course, there are more football champions than there are years because of split votes, etc.) If one includes all of the teams that various organizations have recognized as national football champions, I turned up the following schools as additions to your list: Stanford, Michigan State, Cal, Ohio State, UCLA, Arkansas and Syracuse.

Here's a piece of UNC football trivia:

Charlie Justice finished second in the Heisman voting 3 times.
